{"id":32299,"date":"2017-02-03T02:08:46","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T02:08:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/gambia-dog-that-killed-president-barrow-s-son-put\/"},"modified":"2017-02-03T02:09:11","modified_gmt":"2017-02-03T02:09:11","slug":"gambia-dog-that-killed-president-barrow-s-son-put","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/gambia-dog-that-killed-president-barrow-s-son-put\/","title":{"rendered":"Gambia dog that killed President Barrow&#8217;s son put down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The dog that killed the eight-year-old son of Gambian President Adama Barrow has been put down, a government official has confirmed.}<\/p>\n<p>Habibu Barrow died in hospital after being bitten by the dog last month at his aunt&#8217;s house in a coastal resort near Banjul.<\/p>\n<p>The attack happened before Mr Barrow was inaugurated and while he was still in Senegal for his safety.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-17993 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_93919709_15977446_235665066881645_4507133755667176294_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"Habibu Barrow was bitten by the family dog, according to officials\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The president, who recently returned to the Gambia, missed his son&#8217;s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>Reports say that Habibu &#8211; one of the president&#8217;s five children &#8211; was mauled by the dog and sustained a head injury.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear why the dog attacked the young boy.<\/p>\n<p>The animal, which had been certified rabies free, was put down on Tuesday, with a quick procedure.<\/p>\n<p>The government official said the dog belonged to the aunt and had not attacked anyone before.<\/p>\n<p>He said the attack had worried the family and they were comfortable with the action taken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thought it&#8217;s not safe for the community if the dog was on the streets,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n<p>Many homes in the upmarket area of Fajara, where Habibu was staying along with his mother and other siblings, have security dogs to ward off intruders.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barrow, who won elections in December, was living in neighbouring Senegal at the time after the previous Gambian president, Yahya Jammeh, refused to step down.<\/p>\n<p>He returned to the Gambia last week after Mr Jammeh agreed to leave the country.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-17994 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_93923015_img-20170202-wa0001.jpg\" alt=\"The dog was owned by the president&#039;s sister and was kept within a compound\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Source:BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{The dog that killed the eight-year-old son of Gambian President Adama Barrow has been put down, a government official has confirmed.} Habibu Barrow died in hospital after being bitten by the dog last month at his aunt&#8217;s house in a coastal resort near Banjul.
