{"id":31899,"date":"2017-01-18T00:49:36","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T00:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/mohamed-aboutrika-egypt-adds-ex-footballer-to\/"},"modified":"2017-01-18T00:49:33","modified_gmt":"2017-01-18T00:49:33","slug":"mohamed-aboutrika-egypt-adds-ex-footballer-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/mohamed-aboutrika-egypt-adds-ex-footballer-to\/","title":{"rendered":"Mohamed Aboutrika: Egypt adds ex-footballer to terror list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Egypt has added ex-football star Mohamed Aboutrika to a terror list for his alleged links with the banned Muslim Brotherhood, his lawyer says.}<\/p>\n<p>Mr Aboutrika is accused of financially supporting the Brotherhood, which Egypt considers a terrorist organisation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, he endorsed the successful presidential bid by Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood member.<\/p>\n<p>The move by the 2008 BBC African Footballer of the Year alienated some of his fans.<br \/>\nAny person named on the country&#8217;s terror list is subject to a travel ban and faces having their passport and assets frozen.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Aboutrika&#8217;s lawyer, Mohamed Osman, said the move was &#8220;contrary to the law&#8221;, adding that his client had &#8220;not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will appeal this decision,&#8221; Mr Osman said. Mr Aboutrika has strenuously denied the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>{{Causing a division}}<\/p>\n<p>A former star of Cairo&#8217;s al-Ahly club and the national team, Mr Aboutrika was dubbed The Prince of Hearts, The Magician and The Saint during his playing days.<\/p>\n<p>But his decision to publicly support Mr Morsi, who lasted just one year in power, split opinion.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, he had a string of assets, including shares in a number of companies, seized by the Egyptian authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The army&#8217;s crackdown on Brotherhood members, left hundreds of people dead and thousands in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Morsi was ousted following days of mass anti-government protests in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Aboutrika, one of the most successful African footballers of his generation, retired from football in the same year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-17670 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_93642207_mohamedaboutrika.jpg\" alt=\"Mohamed Aboutrika alienated some of his fans when he publicly endorsed Mohamed Morsi&#039;s 2012 presidential bid\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Egypt has added ex-football star Mohamed Aboutrika to a terror list for his alleged links with the banned Muslim Brotherhood, his lawyer says.} Mr Aboutrika is accused of financially supporting the Brotherhood, which Egypt considers a terrorist organisation.
