{The National Commission for the Fight Against genocide (CNLG) has said that keeping Gacaca files electronically is in final steps and will all be completed by 2018. }
\nThe files include records of all hearings held during Gacaca sittings. <\/p>\n

The CNLG Executive Secretary Dr Jean Damasc\u00e8ne Bizimana has said this today in discussions with the parliamentary commission for political affairs and social welfare on its 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 reports and activities. <\/p>\n

He said that over 10,400,000 Gacaca files have to be kept electronically. <\/p>\n

Dr Bizimana explained that they have addressed obstacles that hampered keeping the files electronically including inadequate budget and equipment and the poor state of a police building in Kacyiru where the files were stored. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe had financial challenges; the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning had given us only Rwf 400 million. They have since added more Rwf 420 million. The problem of equipment has too been solved which makes us believe they will have been kept electronically by 2018,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Dr Bizimana explained that the year 2017 will leave more than 27 million documents digitized and 35 million expected to be finalized in 2018.<\/p>\n

He said that files from 10 districts have been digitized and ongoing for districts of Burera and Nyagatare which do not have many files compared to districts from Southern Province. <\/p>\n

After presenting the report, the political commission and social welfare blamed CNLG for not having included it in the report handed before. <\/p>\n

Senator Tito Rutaremara observed; \u201cYour explanations are true but why didn\u2019t you include it in the report you handed in?”<\/p>\n

Senator Mukasine Marie Claire also requested CNLG to include all details in the written report next time. <\/p>\n

CNLG was assigned to keep Gacaca files electronically after Gacaca courts closed in 2012. After keeping them electronically, they will be accessed on internet by anyone.
\nA total of 60 million files are supposed to be digitized. <\/p>\n
