{"id":31702,"date":"2017-01-10T00:49:21","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T00:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/alassane-ouattara-dismisses-security-chiefs-as-pm\/"},"modified":"2017-01-10T00:49:18","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T00:49:18","slug":"alassane-ouattara-dismisses-security-chiefs-as-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/alassane-ouattara-dismisses-security-chiefs-as-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"Alassane Ouattara dismisses security chiefs as PM quits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{President fires heads of army and police after two-day army mutiny stokes security fears in West African country.}<\/p>\n<p>Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has dismissed the heads of the army, police and gendarmes following a two-day army mutiny that stoked security fears in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Disgruntled soldiers demanding the payment of bonuses and wage increases began their revolt on Friday, seizing control of Bouake, the country&#8217;s second largest city, before troops in military camps in cities and towns across the country joined the mutiny.<\/p>\n<p>General Soumaila Bakayoko, the army chief; Gervais Kouakou Kouassi, superior commander of the National Gendarmerie; and Bredou M&#8217;Bia, director-general of the National Police, were relieved of command with immediate effect, a presidential statement said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The dismissals came just hours after the resignation of Daniel Kablan Duncan, the prime minister, resigned and dissolved the government, a move that had been expected following last month&#8217;s elections but was delayed by the army revolt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have tendered my resignation and that of the government,&#8221; Duncan said after a meeting with Ouattara.<\/p>\n<p>The mutiny came to an end when the government reached a deal with the troops and former divided rebels.<\/p>\n<p>December&#8217;s presidential vote saw Ouattara winning a second consecutive time, maintaining his majority in the parliamentary polls. <\/p>\n<p>Legislative elections, however, are usually followed by a change of government as a matter of procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Ouattara was expected to announce a new prime minister later on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Ivory Coast, French-speaking West Africa&#8217;s largest economy, has emerged from a nine-year political crisis as one of the continent&#8217;s rising economic stars.<\/p>\n<p>However, years of conflict and a failure to reform its army, which includes former rebel fighters and government soldiers, have left it with an unruly force plagued by internal divisions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{President fires heads of army and police after two-day army mutiny stokes security fears in West African country.} Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has dismissed the heads of the army, police and gendarmes following a two-day army mutiny that stoked security fears in the country.
