{"id":31678,"date":"2017-01-09T02:19:05","date_gmt":"2017-01-09T02:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/kenya-heavy-police-presence-ahead-of-mark-too\/"},"modified":"2017-01-09T02:23:32","modified_gmt":"2017-01-09T02:23:32","slug":"kenya-heavy-police-presence-ahead-of-mark-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/kenya-heavy-police-presence-ahead-of-mark-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana leader caught caught plagiarising Bush, Clinton speeches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The newly elected Ghanaian president has begun his administration on a rather embarrassing note after being caught plagiarising former American presidents during his inaugural speech on Saturday.}<\/p>\n<p>President Nana Akufo-Addo, 72, was sworn in alongside his Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia at the Independence Square in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, promising not to \u201clet the people of Ghana down\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Vigilant citizens quickly spotted stark similarities in excerpts of his speech and those delivered by two ex-presidents of the United States decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo first lifted a portion of President Bush\u2019s January 20, 2001 speech where he said: \u201cI ask you to be citizens: Citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens building communities of service and a nation of character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new Ghanaian president said: \u201cI ask you to be citizens: Citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens building communities of service and a nation of character,\u201d without attribution.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, he also used quotes from President Bill Clinton\u2019s speech delivered on January, 20, 1993: \u201cThough our challenges are fearsome, so are our strengths. Americans have ever been a restless, questing, hopeful people. And we must bring to our task today the vision and will of those who came before us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo then carefully tweaked the speech to read: \u201cThough our challenges are fearsome, so are our strengths. Ghanaians have ever been a restless, questing, hopeful people.
