{"id":30967,"date":"2016-12-10T02:50:37","date_gmt":"2016-12-10T02:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/cameroon-urged-to-investigate-deadly-protest\/"},"modified":"2016-12-10T02:50:31","modified_gmt":"2016-12-10T02:50:31","slug":"cameroon-urged-to-investigate-deadly-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/cameroon-urged-to-investigate-deadly-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameroon urged to investigate deadly protest dispersal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{At least four people killed Thursday after police opened fire at demonstrators marching against President Paul Biya.}<\/p>\n<p>A human rights group on Friday called on Cameroon to investigate and prosecute police officers accused of using &#8220;excessive force&#8221; during an anti-government protest where at least four people were killed.<\/p>\n<p>Officers reportedly shot dead four protesters and wounded 20 others on Thursday in the city of Bamenda, part of the country&#8217;s minority English-speaking region, following months of demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of Cameroon&#8217;s two English-speaking provinces say the government makes fewer funds available to them than to French-speaking areas.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: Cameroon teachers, lawyers strike in battle for English<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Authorities in Cameroon must shed light on the circumstances of these killings and injuries by immediately conducting thorough, impartial, and effective investigations,&#8221; Amnesty International&#8217;s Ilaria Allegrozzi said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those reasonably suspected of criminal responsibility for these deaths must be brought to justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The protesters were marching against President Paul Biya and his ruling Cameroon People&#8217;s Democratic Movement (RDPC), which was holding a meeting in Bamenda when they were confronted by police.<\/p>\n<p>Officers initially tried to scatter the demonstrators using tear gas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Opening fire at protesters&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>A Reuters news agency reporter saw police open fire on the crowd, which had continued to grow in size.<\/p>\n<p>Some demonstrators were armed with steel bars and stones, said one police official, adding officers acted in self-defence.<\/p>\n<p>One police officer was wounded in the unrest, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of our elements were surrounded by thugs,&#8221; he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to reporters. &#8220;They had come to kill. The police defended themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Four hostile targets were neutralised.
