{"id":30852,"date":"2016-12-06T02:13:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T02:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/gambia-to-remain-in-icc\/"},"modified":"2016-12-06T02:12:57","modified_gmt":"2016-12-06T02:12:57","slug":"gambia-to-remain-in-icc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/gambia-to-remain-in-icc\/","title":{"rendered":"Gambia &#8216;to remain in ICC&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gambia may not quit the International Criminal Court (ICC) after all.<\/p>\n<p>President-elect Adama Barrow told Germany DW television in an exclusive interview that &#8220;there is no need for us to leave the ICC&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said ICC was advocating good governance \u2013 and that was &#8220;our principal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will come back to the Commonwealth and will be part of all international organisations,&#8221; DW quoted Mr Barrow saying.<br \/>\n&#8220;The moment we take office, we will investigate most of the things that have taken place in this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Under President Yahya Jammeh, Gambia notified the United Nations that it was withdrawing from ICC, becoming the third African country to give formal notice of a pullout.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa and Burundi also ignored appeals from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reverse their decisions and have sent letters confirming that they are quitting the ICC.<\/p>\n<p>Banjul&#8217;s decision to pull out of the court struck a personal blow against the tribunal&#8217;s chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, a Gambian lawyer and former Justice minister.<\/p>\n<p>Gambian Information Minister Sheriff Bojang charged that the ICC had been used &#8220;for the persecution of Africans and especially their leaders&#8221; while ignoring crimes committed by the West.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Barrow defeated President Jammeh in a December 1 election, marking the end of a 22-year rule by the latter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-16879 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/world001_pix.jpg\" alt=\"Gambia&#039;s President-elect Adama Barrow looking on following his victory in the polls in Kololi on December 2, 2016. \" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gambia may not quit the International Criminal Court (ICC) after all.
