{"id":30693,"date":"2016-11-30T00:06:40","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T00:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwamagana-residents-challenged-on-crime\/"},"modified":"2016-11-30T00:06:38","modified_gmt":"2016-11-30T00:06:38","slug":"rwamagana-residents-challenged-on-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwamagana-residents-challenged-on-crime\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwamagana residents challenged on crime prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Residents of Rwamagana district have been urged to enhance their contribution towards crime prevention particularly through timely  information sharing  with security organs.}<\/p>\n<p>The call was made by the District Police Commander (DPC) Superintendent of Police (SP) Edward Kiiza during a recent security meeting that was attended by residents and local leaders<\/p>\n<p>Supt. Kiiza was reacting to cases of assault reported in the area, where some people were blamed for taking the law in their hands against suspected thieves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to warn people against mob justice. You should avoid taking the law in your hands because that itself is a crime. If suspects are caught, they should be handed over to Police for proper course of action,\u201d the DPC told a security meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Article 151 of the Penal Code stipulates that a person found guilty of beating, injuring or killing a person will be jailed for between 10 and 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>If that person commits such a crime in a manner that is premeditated, they face life imprisonment \u2013 the maximum sentence in the land.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must not allow our tempers to dictate the way to deal with these matters. We should let the responsible institutions handle the matter\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The District Mayor, Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi, said; \u201cYour prosperity and the development of your communities depend on how safe you are. Remember, you cannot be safe when you are covering up criminals or when you think it\u2019s not your responsibility to report a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should collectively collaborate with Rwanda National Police in anti-crime awareness and prevention; we can do this by being part of different initiatives that are aligned with crime prevention like neighborhood watch and providing timely information,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to tell residents attending the meeting that; \u201cYou should always keep in mind that security is the pillar for development, without it we can\u2019t make any progress that\u2019s why we need to ensure we preserve it at all times and that\u2019s how the ideal of community policing was born to empower you to ensure that security is maintained in your neighbourhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Residents of Rwamagana district have been urged to enhance their contribution towards crime prevention particularly through timely information sharing with security organs.} The call was made by the District Police Commander (DPC) Superintendent of Police (SP) Edward Kiiza during a recent security meeting that was attended by residents and local leaders Supt.
