{"id":30294,"date":"2016-11-14T02:46:10","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T02:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/millennia-old-mummy-found-in-egypt-tomb\/"},"modified":"2016-11-14T02:46:06","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T02:46:06","slug":"millennia-old-mummy-found-in-egypt-tomb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/millennia-old-mummy-found-in-egypt-tomb\/","title":{"rendered":"Millennia-old mummy found in Egypt tomb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Spanish archaeologists discover mummy at least 2,500 years old in &#8220;very good condition&#8221; near Luxor in southern Egypt.}<\/p>\n<p>Spanish archaeologists have discovered a millennia-old mummy in &#8220;very good condition&#8221; near the southern Egyptian town of Luxor, the antiquities ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The find was in a tomb probably dating from between 1075-664 BC on the west bank of the Nile river, 700km south of Cairo, a statement said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The mummy had been bound with linen stuck together with plaster.   <\/p>\n<p>It was in a brightly coloured wooden sarcophagus and had been buried near a temple from the era of fourth-millennium warrior king Thutmose III.<\/p>\n<p>The tomb was likely to have belonged to a nobleman, Amenrenef, who was &#8220;a servant of the royal household&#8221;, the antiquities ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The archaeological team&#8217;s head, Myriam Seco Alvarez, said the mummy was decorated with &#8220;many colourful decorations recalling religious symbols from ancient Egypt, such as the goddesses Isis and Nephtys displaying their wings, and the four sons of Horus&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest evidence of mummification in Egypt suggests the practice of wrapping bodies to preserve them after death dates back as far as 4500 BC.<\/p>\n<p>Luxor, a city of half a million people on the banks of the Nile, abounds with temples and tombs built by Egypt&#8217;s pharaohs.<\/p>\n<p>It is a key site for Egypt&#8217;s tourist industry, which has been battered by political instability and violence since the 2011 revolution that toppled then-president Hosni Mubarak.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-16389 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/33b491f4b69b4444877f9a114b329eea_18.jpg\" alt=\"The earliest evidence of mummification in Egypt suggests the practice dates back as far as 4500 BC \" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Spanish archaeologists discover mummy at least 2,500 years old in &#8220;very good condition&#8221; near Luxor in southern Egypt.} Spanish archaeologists have discovered a millennia-old mummy in &#8220;very good condition&#8221; near the southern Egyptian town of Luxor, the antiquities ministry said.
