{Rwanda National Police (RNP) has arrested one person and impounded two vehicles that were intercepted as they transported narcotic drugs.}<\/p>\n
In separate operations conducted on October 31, one of the impounded vehicles, a Toyota Carina RAD 336D driven by one Dieudonne Ahishakiye was intercepted at about 4am in Jali in Gasabo District along Kigali-Gatuna road transporting six sacks of cannabis. <\/p>\n
The suspect is currently held at Kicukiro Police station pending further investigations on the origin and likely involvement of other individuals. <\/p>\n
In a related operation in Gicumbi District, acting on information provided by residents, Police also intercepted a Ugandan-registered vehicle with plate number UAR376D carrying about 7700 dozens of Zebra waragi, an illicit gin banned in Rwanda.<\/p>\n
Reacting on the arrest of Ahishakiye, Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, said: \u201cDuring the routine police night patrol, they stopped the vehicle for the usual check up only to find it loaded with six sacks of cannabis and the driver, who was the only person on board, was immediately taken into custody.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are well aware of the tricks traffickers use and that\u2019s why we keep coming up with new measures, increased operations and community policing awareness to be ahead,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, police spokesperson for the Northern region, on the other hand, said they are still searching for the driver of the vehicle that was carrying the illicit gin, who parked it and fled after seeing a police night patrol in a distance. <\/p>\n
\u201cInvestigations are still underway to identify the driver, the owner of the vehicle and all those connected to this criminal business before conclusive investigations file is forwarded to prosecution,\u201d IP Gasasira said.<\/p>\n
Zebra waragi is classified as narcotic drug under the law governing narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in Rwanda.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny drink parked in sachets or plastic bags is illegal and considered illicit; besides, such drinks don\u2019t meet the required standards and their alcoholic content pose danger to consumers and we urge the public, who are our strong partners to press on in this fight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
