{"id":29701,"date":"2016-10-25T02:22:21","date_gmt":"2016-10-25T02:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/cameroon-appeals-for-blood-after-deadly-train\/"},"modified":"2016-10-25T02:22:18","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T02:22:18","slug":"cameroon-appeals-for-blood-after-deadly-train","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/cameroon-appeals-for-blood-after-deadly-train\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameroon appeals for blood after deadly train crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Officials in Cameroon have called on the public to donate blood to assist with the treatment of 600 people wounded in Friday&#8217;s train crash.}<\/p>\n<p>Eleven more bodies were recovered on Sunday, taking the death toll to 80.<br \/>\nFrance&#8217;s ambassador in the country was one high-profile donor who donated blood and urged others to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>The passenger train was travelling from Yaounde, the capital, to the port city of Douala when carriages flipped over at high speed.<\/p>\n<p>President Paul Biya told state TV that victims&#8217; [medical] costs would be paid for by the state.<\/p>\n<p>He said an &#8220;in-depth inquiry&#8221; into the causes of the accident had been ordered.<\/p>\n<p>A day of mourning is being observed in the country with flags flying at half-mast, the BBC Richard Onanena in Yaounde says.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts are still underway at the central hospital of Yaounde to identify some of the dead, our correspondent adds.<\/p>\n<p>The wounded are being treated in hospitals in Yaounde and Douala, the two main cities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>To cope with the emergency, at least 20,000 sachets of blood are needed, which officials hope to secure through the appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is unprecedented and it came suddenly. Treating the wounded involves a considerable number of physicians,&#8221; Tetani Ekwe, vice-chairman of the National Order of Physicians, told BBC Afrique.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t afford to pay for the blood we need, so citizens have to donate their blood,&#8221; Mr Ekwe added.<\/p>\n<p>The National Order of Physicians has called on all medical professionals to go and offer their help at the hospitals where the wounded have been taken.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-15917 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_92066890_cameroontraincrash.jpg\" alt=\"Packed carriages flipped over at high speed\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Officials in Cameroon have called on the public to donate blood to assist with the treatment of 600 people wounded in Friday&#8217;s train crash.} Eleven more bodies were recovered on Sunday, taking the death toll to 80.
