{"id":29079,"date":"2016-10-02T01:14:34","date_gmt":"2016-10-02T01:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/brookside-takes-over-rwanda-s-top-beverage-firm\/"},"modified":"2016-10-02T01:15:37","modified_gmt":"2016-10-02T01:15:37","slug":"brookside-takes-over-rwanda-s-top-beverage-firm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/brookside-takes-over-rwanda-s-top-beverage-firm\/","title":{"rendered":"Brookside takes over Rwanda\u2019s top beverage firm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Brookside Dairy, a company owned by the Kenyatta family, has gained a foothold in Rwanda through the acquisition of another firm.}<\/p>\n<p>The company has acquired a 51 per cent stake in Inyange Industries, a leading beverage manufacturer in the country, according to reports in the online Indian Ocean Newsletter publication.<\/p>\n<p>Inyange, with current investment of up to $70 million, will now hold 49 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The firm is engaged in three main production lines \u2014 milk, water and juice.<\/p>\n<p>The takeover is expected to build the company\u2019s capacity in terms of expertise and financial resources in its quest to expand.<\/p>\n<p>Inyange Industries is owned by Crystal Ventures, the investment arm of the ruling party Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF).<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Brookside and Inyange have been working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources to seek partnerships in improving quality of milk and access to markets.<\/p>\n<p>Brookside has presence in Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>However, when contacted, Brookside Dairy\u2019s director of milk procurement John Gethi said the company was not aware of the claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not aware of any such developments,\u201d Mr Gethi said through the company\u2019s communications officer, Mr Wilson Okong\u2019o.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2015, Brookside Dairy Ltd paid Sh3.5 billion for 51 per cent shareholding in Sameer Agriculture &#038; Livestock Limited, a dairy processing company in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Brookside acquired a 20 per cent stake in Ethiopia\u2019s Elemtu Milk Integrated Industry (Elemtu Diary).<\/p>\n<p>The company is managed by President Kenyatta\u2019s younger brother, Muhoho Kenyatta, who keeps a low profile.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-15423 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/bropic.jpg\" alt=\"Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari is taken on a tour of Brookside Dairy Limited in Ruiri on January 28, 2016.
