{"id":28514,"date":"2016-09-11T02:10:18","date_gmt":"2016-09-11T02:10:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/first-win-in-four-decades-for-seychelles\/"},"modified":"2016-09-11T02:08:43","modified_gmt":"2016-09-11T02:08:43","slug":"first-win-in-four-decades-for-seychelles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/first-win-in-four-decades-for-seychelles\/","title":{"rendered":"First win in four decades for Seychelles opposition LDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The opposition in the Seychelles has won parliamentary elections for the first time in four decades.}<\/p>\n<p>Official results give the opposition coalition, the LDS, fifteen seats in the new National Assembly, five more than the People&#8217;s Party of President James Michel.<\/p>\n<p>Before the result was announced, Mr Michel promised to work with the new assembly.<br \/>\nThe opposition had been expected to win the election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My hope is that this spirit of consultation continues in the new National Assembly, where we all work together for the common good of our nation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The LDS (Seychelles Democratic Alliance) consists of the main opposition party, the liberal SNP (Seychelles National Party) and four smaller opposition parties.<\/p>\n<p>The SNP had refused to take part in the 2011 elections claiming they would not be fair.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Michel&#8217;s People&#8217;s Party has been in power ever since the return of multi-party democracy in 1991, and before that during almost 16 years of one-party rule.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-14899 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_91107072_9dddf8f0-4e19-4669-82e3-4f0db7cf4a94.jpg\" alt=\"The vote in the archipelago nation of 115 islands and 90,000 people took place over three days\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{The opposition in the Seychelles has won parliamentary elections for the first time in four decades.} Official results give the opposition coalition, the LDS, fifteen seats in the new National Assembly, five more than the People&#8217;s Party of President James Michel.
