{The Democratic Republic of Congo\u2019s border with Zambia, the main export route for the country\u2019s copper, re-opened this morning after a 24-hour shutdown prompted by clashes between residents and security forces.}<\/p>\n
\u201cTrucks have started to cross the border again this morning,\u201d Eric Monga, a
\nspokesman for the Chamber of Mines in the southeastern Haut Katanga
\nprovince, said by phone on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The border was closed all day Friday after riots in the Congolese border
\ntown of Kasumbalesa left at least three dead. The violence, in which
\nvehicles and government buildings were burned, started after a money
\nchanger was killed by criminals late Thursday, according to government
\nspokesman Lambert Mende. Local residents clashed with security forces,
\nprotesting what they said was \u201ca failure of the police to protect the
\npopulation,\u201d Mende said by phone from the capital, Kinshasa, on Friday.<\/p>\n
Congo is Africa\u2019s biggest copper producer and the world\u2019s largest source of
\ncobalt, almost all of which is exported via the Kasumbalesa border post.
\nThe Central African nation produced 489,207 metric tons of copper and
