{"id":28472,"date":"2016-09-09T07:34:27","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T07:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/nyamasheke-children-abandon-school-for-odd\/"},"modified":"2016-09-13T05:02:55","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T05:02:55","slug":"nyamasheke-children-abandon-school-for-odd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/nyamasheke-children-abandon-school-for-odd\/","title":{"rendered":"Nyamasheke children abandon school for odd fishing and tea plantation jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Parents in Nyamasheke district are worried over children dropping out of school to provide labour to fishermen in the location known as  Murwa at the shores of Lake Kivu in exchange for food and money.  }<\/p>\n<p>Talking to IGIHE, some of the children have attributed it to poverty. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been working in the garden .Later I joined these fishermen to help in some works since I couldn\u2019t go to school on an empty belly,\u201d said Niyonkuru Jean Baptise, a  primary three  pupil found at the shores. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-14872 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/abana_bari_kugabana_ubugari_bahawe_n_abarobyi.jpg\" alt=\"Nyamasheke children receiving cassava bread from fishers \" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI have come to look for a job so that I can find means to buy basic materials.I monger  small fish and earn to be able to buy  soap when paid but other children  are attracted by  food including cooked small fish and cassava bread,\u201d said another child, Munezero Aim\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Some parents have expressed worries for their children\u2019s future over school drop out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these children are orphans or from poor families that can\u2019t buy even a notebook to use at school. So they prefer to go to the lake to share food with fishermen. Leaders should address the matter to avoid the risk of breeding thieves and street children if nothing is done,\u201d said Nyirabimenyimana Adeline. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-14873 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/bamwe_mu_bana_bari_kumwe_n_abarobyi.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The mayor of Nyamasheke district, Kamali Aim\u00e9 Fabien has said that they had banned such children at the lake but pledged to make follow up to solve the matter if children returned to the place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have banned all children from the lake shores and we punish whoever found with a child there. It would be a serious matter if it happened again.
