{"id":28125,"date":"2016-08-29T00:45:08","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T00:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/how-elephant-seals-are-helping-scientists-study\/"},"modified":"2016-08-29T00:45:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T00:45:00","slug":"how-elephant-seals-are-helping-scientists-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/how-elephant-seals-are-helping-scientists-study\/","title":{"rendered":"How Elephant Seals Are Helping Scientists Study Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{A group of southern elephant seals is helping scientists monitorhow climate change is impacting Antarctica by tracking water temperature, depth, and salinity as they swim and dive around the frozen continent.}<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, data from the seals \u2014 which routinely dive to depths of 1,000 to 2,000 feet \u2014 showed that water melting off the Antarctic ice sheet is causing the surrounding seas to become less salty, disrupting a conveyor belt-like system that transfers heat and nutrients around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>The new findings were published this week in the journal Nature Communications.
