President Sirleaf said, \u201cto hastily abolish the practice could spark off a serious societal crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n
FGM is widely practised in Liberia with thousands of young girls annually initiated in traditional \u201cschools\u201d known as the Sande Society in preparation for mutilation.<\/p>\n
More than half of the country\u2019s 16 ethnic groups in north eastern, parts of eastern, western and northern Liberia practice FGM.<\/p>\n
Those who practise it argue that it controls a woman\u2019s sexual urge.<\/p>\n
