{Rwanda National Police together with several of its stakeholders, on July 30, joined residents of Gahanga sector, Kicukiro district in the monthly umuganda that was marked with painting zebra crossings and road safety sensitization.}<\/p>\n
Every last Saturday of the month, Rwandans come together in community work commonly known as \u2018Umuganda.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Present at Umuganda was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Dr. C\u00e9lestin Ntivuguruzwa, representatives from of, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA), Officials from the City of kigali and Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Murenzi Sebakondo who represented RNP along with several Police Officers.<\/p>\n
Officials created new zebra crossing and painted existing ones, also dwelt on equipping road users with tips on how to use road safely especially children.<\/p>\n
The Permanent Secretary Dr Ntivuguruzwa commended Rwanda National Police remarkable role in ensuring road safety saying that \u201cWe believe compliance to road traffic laws goes hand-in-hand with effective enforcement mechanism.<\/p>\n
” We also believe that more can be achieved especially in preventing road accidents if everyone took it upon themselves to report any traffic offender.\u201d<\/p>\n
With regard to Umuganda Dr Ntivuguruzwa requested all leaders to keep up the momentum in mobilizing the masses to participate.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a plan together with our stakeholders of putting zebra crossings near every school in Kigali and possibly beyond,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the community about safe use of roads, the spokesperson of traffic and Road Safety department, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kabanda said that putting up zebra crossings help in reducing the number of road accidents and facilitate road users. <\/p>\n
He urged residents of Gahanga sector to preserve infrastructure put in place and also asked them to educate children on how to cross roads.<\/p>\n
\u201cRNP highly appreciates the partnership with several stakeholders since it enhances public safety,\u201d said CIP Kabanda.<\/p>\n
He reminded vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles comply to traffic rules and regulations and observe standards set for public safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince Mechanical defaults are among the major causes of road accidents, we also request you to ensure that your cars are in a proper mechanical conditions. Every vehicle must have a Motor Vehicle Inspection certificate. <\/p>\n
People should refrain from using fraudulent means to acquire the certificates and putting people\u2019s lives at risk,\u201d said CIP Kabanda.<\/p>\n
The Mayor of Kicukiro, Dr JeanneNyirahabimana Community work is one of the ways through which people can get to know each other and a platform to forge home grown solutions to community problems. <\/p>\n
