{"id":27265,"date":"2016-07-27T07:51:47","date_gmt":"2016-07-27T07:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/murekezi-decries-vandalism-of-irrigation\/"},"modified":"2016-08-02T00:50:21","modified_gmt":"2016-08-02T00:50:21","slug":"murekezi-decries-vandalism-of-irrigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/murekezi-decries-vandalism-of-irrigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Murekezi decries vandalism of irrigation equipment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The government of Rwanda has warned thieves pillaging equipments meant to serve public interest to stop the vice as they cannot be tolerated at all.}<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister, Anastase Murekezi made the warning as he presided over the inauguration of Rwangingo dam in Gatsibo district for the irrigation of Rwangingo-Karangazi marshland of 900 hectares where he decried the chain of people in conspiracy of stealing irrigation equipment in Nyagatare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn Irrigation project in Nyagatare halted because of vandalism. This must stop,\u201d he warned.  <\/p>\n<p>Murekezi said that the government can\u2019t tolerate such robbery leading the government and its people into losses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think we can tolerate such culture? Is there any government which can tolerate such wrong acts? Why can\u2019t you bring the offenders in this meeting and ask leaders to fight  such deeds?,\u201d he asked with fury. <\/p>\n<p>Irrigation machines worth Rwf 120 million availed by the government of Rwanda to farmers in Matimba-Musheri valley,  Nyagatare district of Eastern Province have been stolen and resulted in the suspension  of watering activities.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism of watering valleys and marshlands and hills was initiated by the government of Rwanda as a way of boosting production  and addressing drought affecting the Eastern Province. <\/p>\n<p>Rwanda invested more than Rwf 2 billion in irrigation activities of Matimba valley in Eastern Province but the project stopped as the machines were vandalized. <\/p>\n<p>Unidentified vandals are suspected to have fled to Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Murekezi requested people to keep an eye on public property. \u201cSuch theft took place in Nyagatare district .I don\u2019t want it to reach Gatsibo district. Such wrong act should not occur in Nyagatare again and elsewhere in Rwanda. People should be happy for availed infrastructures since they are meant for their development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Talking to IGIHE, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Innocent Musabyimana said that activities of irrigating  200 hectares in Nyagatare district stopped adding that the machines are getting repaired and will be operating next week.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Nyagatare district, Mupenzi George has said that people involved in the robbery of public equipment are being investigated for trial.
