{"id":27068,"date":"2016-07-20T07:34:56","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T07:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/nyamasheke-farmers-cry-foul-as-wild-animals\/"},"modified":"2016-07-22T06:10:03","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T06:10:03","slug":"nyamasheke-farmers-cry-foul-as-wild-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/nyamasheke-farmers-cry-foul-as-wild-animals\/","title":{"rendered":"Nyamasheke farmers cry foul as wild animals ravage gardens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Residents of Cyato and Rangiro sectors of Nyamasheke district have expressed frustrations over straying wild animals from Nyungwe National Park that graze and destroy their crops yet receive no compensation, leaving them susceptible to famine and hunger. }<\/p>\n<p>Chimpanzees and monkeys are among wild animals said to stampede into gardens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch animals graze whatever kind of crops whether maize, bananas or beans among others,\u201d said Christine Ayingeneye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stray animals put us on starvation risk despite our efforts to grow crops,\u201d said Nyiramwiza Ange.<\/p>\n<p>The governor of Western province, Mukandasira Caritas promised advocacy for citizens whose crops are destroyed by animals from the park. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am going to advocate for them to stakeholders do that their survival is not threatened. There is no reason why they should not be compensated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The manager of Nyungwe Park, Louis Rugerinyange has told IGIHE that damages to gardens caused by monkeys are not compensated since they live out of the park.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDamages of monkeys are not compensated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Previously when parliamentarians visited Rangiro residents they promised advocacy to list monkeys among animals garden destroying animals for which destruction farmers can be compensated. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c We will advocate for the matter as a usual. We will approach Rwanda Development Board  to establish whether the list can be revised,\u201d said parliamentarian, Kabasinga Chantal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the structure of the park and the way it has to be preserved, stakeholders consider different alternatives since having animals ravaging citizens\u2019 crops is a serious issue.
