{"id":26998,"date":"2016-07-18T02:28:26","date_gmt":"2016-07-18T02:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/morocco-seeks-to-rejoin-african-union-after-32\/"},"modified":"2016-07-18T02:28:15","modified_gmt":"2016-07-18T02:28:15","slug":"morocco-seeks-to-rejoin-african-union-after-32","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/morocco-seeks-to-rejoin-african-union-after-32\/","title":{"rendered":"Morocco seeks to rejoin African Union after 32 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Morocco has formally announced its wish to rejoin the African Union, 32 years after leaving the organisation.}<\/p>\n<p>In a message to the AU summit in Rwanda, the Moroccan King Mohammed VI said the time had come for his country to retake its place within its institutional family.<br \/>\nMorocco left the AU in 1984, after the organisation recognised the independence of Western Sahara.<\/p>\n<p>Moroccans describe Western Sahara as their country&#8217;s &#8220;southern provinces&#8221;.<br \/>\nFor more than three decades, Morocco has refused to be part of the organisation.<br \/>\nIn March, it threatened to pull its soldiers out of UN global peacekeeping missions because of the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Moroccan authorities seem to have concluded their absence hasn&#8217;t helped them diplomatically over Western Sahara and many other issues, says the BBC&#8217;s Africa Reporter James Copnall.<\/p>\n<p>They sent a special envoy to lobby African leaders at their summit in the Rwandan capital Kigali this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The AU has said that it will continue pushing for the rights of the people of Western Sahara to hold a self-determination referendum.<\/p>\n<p>Morocco is the only African country which is not an AU member.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-13607 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_90427169_mediaitem90427168.jpg\" alt=\"Last month Morocco&#039;s King Mohammed VI met Rwandan President Paul Kagame, whose country is hosting the AU summit\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Morocco has formally announced its wish to rejoin the African Union, 32 years after leaving the organisation.} In a message to the AU summit in Rwanda, the Moroccan King Mohammed VI said the time had come for his country to retake its place within its institutional family.
