{"id":26042,"date":"2016-06-13T03:08:29","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T03:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/obama-and-world-leaders-condemn-orlando-shooting\/"},"modified":"2016-06-13T03:08:26","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T03:08:26","slug":"obama-and-world-leaders-condemn-orlando-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/obama-and-world-leaders-condemn-orlando-shooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama and world leaders condemn Orlando shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Politicians and religious leaders denounce shooting that killed 50 people and injured at least 53 more.}<\/p>\n<p>Politicians and religious leaders have been quick to react to the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that killed 50 people and injured at least 53 more.<\/p>\n<p>US President Barack Obama said Americans are grieving &#8220;the brutal murder, the horrific massacre of dozens of innocent people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although it is still early in the investigation, we know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate,&#8221; he said in a televised address on Sunday. <\/p>\n<p>The president also repeated his earlier calls for tighter gun control, saying the fact that the attacker was armed with a handgun and a powerful assault rifle was a reminder of &#8220;how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon, that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship or a movie theatre or in a nightclub&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Presumptive presidential nominees from both parties reacted to the mass shooting, the deadliest in US history, on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump , the Republican party&#8217;s presumptive nominee, called it a &#8220;horrific incident&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Horrific incident in FL. As we wait for more information, my thoughts are with those affected by this horrific act. -H<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) June 12, 2016<br \/>\nSpeaking to NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221;, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders also condemned the &#8220;horrific&#8221; murders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our hopes go out to all those who were shot that they can recover,&#8221; Sanders said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Twenty-five years ago, I believed that in this country that we should not be selling automatic weapons which are designed to kill people,&#8221; the Vermont senator added. <\/p>\n<p>Florida Governor Rick Scott said in a statement: &#8220;Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, families and all those affected by this horrific tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are a strong and resilient state and we will devote every resource available to assist with the shooting in Orlando.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Orlando: Ban Ki-moon condemns attack; extends deepest condolences to victims&#8217; families &#038; expresses solidarity w\/ Govt &#038; ppl of the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 United Nations (@UN) June 12, 2016<br \/>\nLondon&#8217;s new Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted that he stood with the city of Orlando against bigotry and hatred.<\/p>\n<p>I stand with the City of Orlando against hate and bigotry. My thoughts are with all the victims of this horrific attack #lovewins<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mayor of London (@MayorofLondon) June 12, 2016<br \/>\nThe Vatican said Pope Francis expressed the &#8220;deepest feelings of horror and condemnation&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>The pope denounced the &#8220;homicidal folly and senseless hatred&#8221;, said the Reverend Federico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman. Francis also offered &#8220;prayer and compassion&#8221; to those affected by the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>European Council President Donald Tusk said &#8220;Europe mourns the victims&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Europe mourns the victims of the horrific gun attack in Orlando.
