{"id":26041,"date":"2016-06-13T03:06:08","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T03:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/syria-civil-war-dozens-killed-in-idlib-air\/"},"modified":"2016-06-13T03:05:49","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T03:05:49","slug":"syria-civil-war-dozens-killed-in-idlib-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/syria-civil-war-dozens-killed-in-idlib-air\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria civil war: Dozens killed in Idlib air strikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{At least 27 people, including five children, killed in raids on Idlib and Maarat al-Numan, monitoring group says.}<\/p>\n<p>Air strikes have killed at least 27 people in rebel-held areas in Syria&#8217;s northwestern Idlib province, a monitoring group has said.<\/p>\n<p>At least 21 people, five of them children, were killed in raids, including on a marketplace, in Idlib city, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were regime and allied Russian warplanes flying in the area today. But we do not know yet which planes had carried out the strikes,&#8221; the observatory&#8217;s head Rami Abdel Rahman told the DPA news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, aerial bombardments in the town of Maarat al-Numan, about 30km south of Idlib city, killed another six people, the observatory said.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: Civilians flee Idlib bombardment<\/p>\n<p>Idlib city and the province by the same name is held by a coalition of rebel groups, including al-Nusra Front, a powerful Syrian group with ties to al-Qaeda.<\/p>\n<p>Russia deployed warplanes to Syria last year to support President Bashar al-Assad against rebels seeking to end his rule. Moscow is also backing Syrian government forces in a separate fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) further east.<\/p>\n<p>There has been heavy bombardment of areas in Idlib province in recent weeks, including air strikes that killed at least 50 people last month.<br \/>\nSeveral monitoring groups, as well as Turkish authorities accused Russia of conducting these air strikes, but Russian authorities denied any involvment.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian conflict, which began with peaceful protests in March 2011, has escalated into a multi-sided civil war.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll has risen to more than 250,000 people while half the country&#8217;s population have been forced from their homes, according to UN estimates.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-12769 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/e26ba74649c5424eaf8689f8146305c9_18.jpg\" alt=\"Idlib city and the province by the same name is held by a coalition of rebel groups \" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{At least 27 people, including five children, killed in raids on Idlib and Maarat al-Numan, monitoring group says.} Air strikes have killed at least 27 people in rebel-held areas in Syria&#8217;s northwestern Idlib province, a monitoring group has said.
