{"id":26034,"date":"2016-06-13T02:33:47","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T02:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/cameron-warns-of-lost-decade-over-eu-vote\/"},"modified":"2016-06-13T02:33:43","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T02:33:43","slug":"cameron-warns-of-lost-decade-over-eu-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/cameron-warns-of-lost-decade-over-eu-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameron warns of \u2018lost decade\u2019 over EU vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Worries as opinion polls are suggesting momentum is with the \u2018Leave\u2019 camp.}<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister David Cameron warned Sunday that Britain faces a \u201clost decade\u201d if it leaves the European Union, as he races to persuade undecided voters less than two weeks before a close referendum.<\/p>\n<p>With several recent opinion polls suggesting momentum is with the \u201cLeave\u201d camp, Mr Cameron is making a string of television appearances to try to convince people to back \u201cRemain\u201d on June 23.<\/p>\n<p>A string of global institutions including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and G7 have backed Cameron\u2019s argument that Britain\u2019s economy would be damaged by Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cLeave\u201d supporters argue that Britain could thrive outside the EU, where they say it would be freed of red tape.<\/p>\n<p>One of the leading pro-Brexit campaigners, UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, said that voters were putting \u201ctwo fingers up\u201d to establishment figures like Cameron.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister told the BBC on Sunday that there could be a \u201clost decade for Britain\u201d after a vote to leave the EU as the political system gets gummed up with negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019d be looking at a decade of uncertainty,\u201d he added. \u201cIt would suck the energy out of our government and our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Sunday Times\/YouGov online poll found that Mr Cameron\u2019s \u201cRemain\u201d campaign is lagging the \u201cLeave\u201d side by 42 per cent to 43 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>UNDECIDED VOTERS<\/p>\n<p>Eleven percent of people surveyed said they did not know how they would vote, while four percent said they would not take part in the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Averaging out the last six opinion polls, both sides are tied on 50 percent, according to academics at the What UK Thinks project. Their figures exclude undecided voters.<br \/>\n\u201cNobody knows what these polls are saying,\u201d Cameron told the BBC, while stressing he was optimistic of victory.<\/p>\n<p>But Farage insisted that they showed a real movement towards his side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a shift in the last fortnight,\u201d the UKIP leader said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have had enough of being threatened by the prime minister and the chancellor and I think collectively people are beginning to put two fingers up to the political class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cLeave\u201d camp has repeatedly focused on concerns about immigration from the EU to Britain and the possibility of Turkey joining the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cameron dismissed this as a \u201ccomplete red herring\u201d in Sunday\u2019s BBC interview, insisting: \u201cThere\u2019s no prospect of Turkey joining the EU in decades\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers have also denied a story in this week\u2019s Sunday Times that British diplomats had considered letting up to 1.5 million Turkish citizens have visa-free travel to Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The paper published details of five diplomatic documents which it said could mean a planned deal giving Turkish citizens easier access to the EU\u2019s Schengen area being extended to Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The EU agreed in March to offer Turkey visa-free access, increased aid and speeded up accession talks in return for Ankara controlling the flood of migrants crossing into Greece.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-12765 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/953915-01-02.jpg\" alt=\"Britain\u2019s Prime Minister David Cameron (left) and his wife Samantha and British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne take their seats for a national service of thanksgiving for the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II at St Paul\u2019s Cathedral in London \" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Worries as opinion polls are suggesting momentum is with the \u2018Leave\u2019 camp.} Prime Minister David Cameron warned Sunday that Britain faces a \u201clost decade\u201d if it leaves the European Union, as he races to persuade undecided voters less than two weeks before a close referendum.
