White House hopeful Donald Trump received a warm welcome on Monday as he addressed a motorcycle rally that attracted many military veterans to the US capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will protect every bit of the Second Amendment\u201d right to bear arms, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee told several thousand people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial, traditionally a favoured spot for major political demonstrations in Washington.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to rebuild our military\u201d and \u201cwe are going to take care of our veterans\u201d the billionaire said in a brief speech as the crowd \u2014 consisting of leather-clad bikers, tourists and other spectators \u2014 cheered him on.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump asked during his address why other countries, nodding at Japan, aren\u2019t asked to pay \u201c100 percent\u201d of the cost of deploying US troops to overseas bases.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we are stupid,\u201d responded a voice in the crowd.<\/p>\n

GET RID OF POLITICIANS<\/p>\n

The Rolling Thunder rally is an annual event that sees thousands of bikers \u2014 many of them former service members \u2014 roar into Washington.<\/p>\n

Jack Bellamy, a 41-year-old veteran and biker from northern Virginia, was thrilled that Trump addressed the rally.
\n\u201cThe other candidates, they don\u2019t want to do anything for the vets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to get rid of politicians\u201d who \u201cdon\u2019t listen to people\u201d and \u201cput someone else in power,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mr Bellamy lamented that things were not going well in the United States, pointing to federal government guidelines telling public schools to let transgender students use the bathroom of their choice as an example.<\/p>\n

A group of states is now suing over the move. \u201cThe whole bathroom issue … they tried to shovel it down our throats,\u201d Bellamy said. \u201cA man is a man, a woman is a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

First started in 1988, Rolling Thunder draws bikers from around the country to Washington on the Memorial Day holiday weekend honouring the nation\u2019s war dead.<\/p>\n

Some 300,000 were expected for this year\u2019s event, according to the Pentagon, which on Sunday morning hosted the start of a flag-filled parade through the streets of downtown Washington.<\/p>\n
