{"id":25057,"date":"2016-05-03T01:37:24","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T01:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/papa-wemba-decorated-in-dr-congo\/"},"modified":"2016-05-03T01:37:12","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T01:37:12","slug":"papa-wemba-decorated-in-dr-congo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/papa-wemba-decorated-in-dr-congo\/","title":{"rendered":"Papa Wemba decorated in DR Congo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Papa Wemba collapsed while performing at a festival in Cote d\u2019Ivoire on April 24.}<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Republic of Congo\u2019s rumba king Papa Wemba (above) was posthumously awarded one of his country\u2019s highest honours today, a week after he collapsed on stage and died aged 66.<\/p>\n<p>At a ceremony in the national parliament in Kinshasa, where Papa Wemba\u2019s body lay in state, Congo\u2019s President Joseph Kabila made the singer a grand officer of the Order of National Heros Kabila-Lumumba for \u201cthe merits, the loyal and eminent services rendered to the Congolese nation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Papa Wemba collapsed while performing at a festival in Cote d\u2019Ivoire on April 24.<\/p>\n<p>The flamboyant musician, who led the Kinshasa music scene for four decades, died before reaching hospital.<\/p>\n<p>An enormous red hat, modelled on the one the renowned sharp dresser was wearing at the time of his death, served as the roof of the chapel erected to house his coffin inside parliament.<\/p>\n<p>A life-sized effigy of the singer, dressed as he was during his last concert, stood behind it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPapa Wemba, the Congo orphaned,\u201d read a giant banner at the entrance to the building, where the funeral procession arrived early in the morning to be welcomed by the city governor and the military band of the Republican Guard.<\/p>\n<p>A Roman Catholic priest accompanied the coffin, which was carried by eight men in black and draped in the national flag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is great suffering and sadness,\u201d said Biby Krubwa, who starred alongside Papa Wemba in a 1988 film, \u2018La Vie est Belle\u2019 (\u2018Life is Rosy\u2019) about an aspiring singer who comes to Kinshasa. \u201cPapa Wemba is a baobab that has fallen.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-12064 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/papa-6.jpg\" alt=\"Members of Papa Wemba&#039;s music group dance and sing during a concert in tribute to him on April 27, 2016 at the Palace of Culture in Abidjan.
