Germany on Thursday criticised Republican White House frontrunner Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica first\u201d prescriptions for US foreign policy as doomed to failure in today\u2019s globalised world.<\/p>\n

In restrained diplomatic remarks, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier described Mr Trump\u2019s radical proposed overhaul of US diplomacy and defence policy presented Wednesday as \u201cnot without its contradictions\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c’America first\u2019 – the key question is what does that mean for America\u2019s foreign policy engagement,\u201d Mr Steinmeier told reporters when asked about Trump\u2019s closely-watched policy speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world\u2019s security architecture cannot be organised in a unilateral way. No American president will be able to ignore this changed reality, so \u2018America first\u2019 actually cannot be the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Steinmeier questioned the logic of \u201csaying on the one hand \u2018we\u2019re going to make America strong again\u2019 and on the other, emphasising America\u2019s retreat from the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two don\u2019t quite seem to go together,\u201d he said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t really seem thought through.\u201d<\/p>\n

FOREIGN POLICY SPEECH<\/p>\n

In a major foreign policy speech short on specifics, Mr Trump warned that Europe and Asia may have to defend themselves, and vowed to tear up trade deals, retool Nato to oppose migration and \u201cradical Islam\u201d and put US national interests ahead of all other considerations.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks came just days after US President Barack Obama wrapped up a trip to Europe in Germany, which he hailed as a major trade partner, Nato ally and political anchor of stability in a crisis-racked EU.<\/p>\n

While Obama praised Chancellor Angela Merkel\u2019s welcoming stance toward asylum seekers as being \u201con the right side of history\u201d, Trump has blasted Germany\u2019s decision to let in hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees as \u201cinsane\u201d.<\/p>\n

During a joint press conference with President Obama on Sunday, Merkel declined to comment on the prospect of Trump winning the White House in November, saying only that she was following the US campaign \u201cwith interest\u201d.<\/p>\n
