{"id":24720,"date":"2016-04-19T02:11:26","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T02:11:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/armed-men-from-south-sudan-kill-200-people-in\/"},"modified":"2016-04-19T02:11:07","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T02:11:07","slug":"armed-men-from-south-sudan-kill-200-people-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/armed-men-from-south-sudan-kill-200-people-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Armed men from South Sudan kill 200 people in Ethiopia raid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Ethiopian officials blame Murle tribesmen from South Sudan for a series of deadly attacks on Ethiopian villages in the western Gambella region on Friday.}<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 people were killed and over 100 children abducted by armed men from South Sudan in a cross-border raid into Ethiopia, the country\u2019s leader said.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopian officials blame Murle tribesmen from South Sudan for a series of deadly attacks on Ethiopian villages in the western Gambella region on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe atrocities committed by an armed Murle tribe from South Sudan claimed the lives of 208,\u201d Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said on state television on Sunday evening, increasing the death toll from an earlier estimate of 140.<\/p>\n<p>Hailemariam said \u201cmothers and children\u201d were among the dead and, \u201cthey also abducted 102 children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The foreign ministry said over 2,000 livestock were also stolen.<\/p>\n<p>The Murle, a tribe from South Sudan based in the eastern Jonglei region close to the Ethiopian border, often stage raids to steal cattle and abduct children but rarely on such a large or deadly scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere had been abduction of children and raiding of cattle from Gambella through crossing the Ethiopian border. However, Friday\u2019s attack was massive\u201d Hailemariam said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ethiopian defence force is taking measures against the attackers to free the abducted children without any precondition,\u201d he said, without specifying whether Ethiopian troops had crossed the border into South Sudan.
