{Police in Kirehe District is holding a 23-year old man, who was arrested after he was found in possession of different types of pharmaceutical products, which he allegedly acquired and sold illegally on the black market.}<\/p>\n

Danny Muhoza was arrested on Saturday during a police cordon and search operation in Rugarama Cell of Kigina Sector.<\/p>\n

Muhoza was at the time of his arrest, found with several packets of Coartem, a malaria drug, arrhythmic, Amoxicillin and paracetamol.<\/p>\n

The pharmaceuticals were recovered in his house.<\/p>\n

Police said Muhoza\u2019s actions contravene law number 12\/99 relating to the pharmaceutical art.<\/p>\n

Pharmaceutical Art means any act aimed at preparing, manufacturing, quality controlling, conditioning, preserving, and dispensing, even without charge, of drugs or other Pharmaceutical products.<\/p>\n

Reacting to the incident, the Eastern region police spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi warned against such acts, which put people\u2019s lives as \u201chigh risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a serious criminal offense that undermines the credibility of our health systems, which shouldn\u2019t be tolerated by anyone,\u201d IP Kayigi said.<\/p>\n

He appealed to communities residing along borders to always be on watch-out and report such people who try to smuggle goods and illicit drugs into the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should, therefore, be the responsibility of every Rwandan to fight anything that might be of ill-effect to their lives; people should also seek proper medical services from recognized pharmacies, clinics, health centres and hospitals and other legal medical facilities,\u201d said the regional spokesperson.<\/p>\n

He referred to article 91 of the law relating to the pharmaceutical art that stipulates that; \u201cWhoever engages in activities reserved to pharmacists without fulfilling the legal requirements will be punished by imprisonment of one year and a fine not exceeding Rwf500, 000.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same law states in its article 95 that \u201chome trafficking, brokerage and displaying drugs and other pharmaceutical products to markets or public places or in any other unauthorized place will be punished by imprisonment not exceeding one year or with a fine not exceeding Rwf500, 000.\u201d<\/p>\n
