{"id":24562,"date":"2016-04-13T01:45:52","date_gmt":"2016-04-13T01:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/car-prime-minister-sarandji-names-23-member\/"},"modified":"2016-04-13T01:45:14","modified_gmt":"2016-04-13T01:45:14","slug":"car-prime-minister-sarandji-names-23-member","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/car-prime-minister-sarandji-names-23-member\/","title":{"rendered":"CAR Prime Minister Sarandji names 23-member Cabinet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Thousands lost their lives in wave of violence as millions more fled their homes.}<\/p>\n<p>The Central African Republic unveiled Tuesday its first new government since a peaceful presidential vote in February seen as a step toward reconciliation after years of sectarian violence.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mathieu Simplice Sarandji\u2019s cabinet announced on national radio has 23 members, with none drawn from the Muslim and Christian militias behind the bloodletting sparked by a coup three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Three candidates who came up short against President Faustin-Archange Touadera, elected in a February 14 run-off vote, are in the cabinet, including Defence Minister Joseph Yakete.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Serge Bokassa, tapped for interior minister, and Charles Armel Doubane, who will handle foreign affairs, also ran unsuccessfully to lead the war-torn nation.<\/p>\n<p>FRANCOIS BOZIZE OUSTER<\/p>\n<p>CAR\u2019s most recent episode of bloodletting was sparked by the March 2013 ousting of long-serving president Francois Bozize, a Christian, by the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The coup sparked a series of revenge attacks involving Muslim forces and Christian vigilante groups known as \u201canti-balaka\u201d (anti-machete) militias.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands were slaughtered in the spiral of atrocities that drove about a tenth of the population of 4.8 million to flee their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The new cabinet will also include some familiar faces, with at least three having served under Touadera when he was Bozize\u2019s prime minister from 2008-2013.<\/p>\n<p>Among them are: Leopold Mboli-Fatrane, who is responsible for mines in the mineral-rich nation, and Theodore Jousso, transport and civil aviation minister.<\/p>\n<p>Marking a success in CAR\u2019s effort to return to normalcy, it was re-admitted last week to the African Union, ending a three-year suspension following the 2013 coup.<\/p>\n<p>The bloc lauded CAR for \u201csuccessfully holding\u201d the elections, which passed off without violence despite widespread fears of unrest.<\/p>\n<p>The violence disrupted farming, transport and public services in one of the world\u2019s poorest nations and was so serious that France \u2014 the former colonial power \u2014 launched a military intervention and the UN deployed a peacekeeping force.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-11606 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/398492-01-02.jpg\" alt=\"People queue at a polling station in the muslim district of PK 5 before voting on February 14, 2016, in Central African Republic.\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Thousands lost their lives in wave of violence as millions more fled their homes.} The Central African Republic unveiled Tuesday its first new government since a peaceful presidential vote in February seen as a step toward reconciliation after years of sectarian violence.
