{"id":24553,"date":"2016-04-13T00:52:32","date_gmt":"2016-04-13T00:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/police-warns-over-illegal-cutting-of-trees-as-10\/"},"modified":"2016-04-13T00:52:09","modified_gmt":"2016-04-13T00:52:09","slug":"police-warns-over-illegal-cutting-of-trees-as-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/police-warns-over-illegal-cutting-of-trees-as-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Police warns over illegal cutting of trees as 10 are arrested"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Police have warned the public against encroaching forest reserves and illegal cutting of trees.}<\/p>\n<p>The warning follows the arrest of 10 people in Nyaruguru District on April 11, for allegedly felling down about one-and-half hectares of trees in the gazetted forests in Gakoma and Nyange cells of Kibeho Sector.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects apparently cut the trees to burn charcoal.<\/p>\n<p>Police identified the suspects as Damascene Nikuze, Alphonse Ntakirutimana, Nshimiyimana, Simon Nyamagana and Viateur Ndayisenga.<\/p>\n<p>Others are Emmanuel Mayira, Andr\u00e9 Nkeshimana, Eugene Ntirushimana, Eugene Semagazi and Emmanuel Ngirumpatse.<\/p>\n<p>They are currently detained at Mata Police station.<\/p>\n<p>The organic law determining the modalities of protection, conservation and promotion of environment in Rwanda prohibits the felling of trees in forests and protected areas.<\/p>\n<p>Article 96 states that \u201canyone who, in a manner that is not provided for by the law that governs it, burns, cuts trees or who causes others to do so or kills animals in protected forests and other protected areas and in national parks, is punished by an imprisonment of two months to two years and a fine ranging from Rwf300, 000 to Rwf2 million or one of the two penalties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Accomplices are also liable for the same penalties.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern region police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Andre Hakizimana said; \u201cCutting of trees or deforestation contributes to environment degradation, which in one way or another has an effect on people\u2019s health and the ecosystem, which we can\u2019t allow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are acts that are against the environmental law and other legal instruments like the penal code in its article 416.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The said penal code article also sets penalties of up to two years imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>He appealed to communities residing near forestry reserves to take the lead to conserve them and report those who encroach on them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-11600 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/png\/amapingu1-405x270_09.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Police have warned the public against encroaching forest reserves and illegal cutting of trees.} The warning follows the arrest of 10 people in Nyaruguru District on April 11, for allegedly felling down about one-and-half hectares of trees in the gazetted forests in Gakoma and Nyange cells of Kibeho Sector.
