{The United States of America has lauded Rwanda\u2019s program of education for all especially in literacy programs for adult considering it a good step contributing to attain sustainable development.}<\/p>\n

This was unveiled yesterday during ceremony of handing over 624 certificates to elders from Huye district that benefited from literacy programs offered by volunteers of ADEPR church for a period of three months, orted by US through the project \u2018Ejo Heza\u2019 of Global Communities.<\/p>\n

American ambassador in Rwanda, Erica J. Barks Ruggles, lauded Rwandan government and the Ministry of Education for putting efforts in eradicating illiteracy through collaborations that are ushering in change.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am grateful for good leadership of Rwandan government over setting channels of eradicating illiteracy through the Ministry of Education. It is a good act promising to bring the country and its citizens to sustainable development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Erica has particularly voiced appreciation to ADEPR church over its commendable role in offering literacy programs for elders where more than 7000 elderly people have been taught in the past five years. <\/p>\n

Ruggles said that America will keep supporting Rwandan development projects.
\nElders who benefited from literacy programs said that they have been enlightened for now they can now read and write. <\/p>\n

The Director of USAID Ejo Heza in Rwanda, John Ames, said that through collaboration with ADEPR, they extend support beyond literacy programs to include various activities such as designing development projects, working in cooperatives and joining financial institutions and tip them on saving among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only did we equip them with literacy programs but also taught them how to run activities helping to get out of poverty. We have over 400 groups in eight districts in which they run credit and saving transactions. We also teach them to build kitchen gardens, proper breastfeeding and hygiene among others,\u201dhe said.<\/p>\n

The governor of Southern Province, Alphonse Munyantwali requested those who graduated from literacy programs to share with others the benefits of extricating from illiteracy and encourage children to join schools early as education is the foundation of everything.<\/p>\n

Statistics from ADEPR indicates that 37,000 people in Rwanda have been helped out of illiteracy while 80% have passed national exam organized by the Ministry of Education.<\/p>\n
