{Police in Muhanga District held a meeting with over 400 commercial cyclists operating in Muhanga town, on February 4, and urged them to abide by traffic rules as means of avoiding reckless accidents.}<\/p>\n

Inspector of Police (IP) Claver Kayihura, the District Community Liaison Officer, while meeting the cyclists recently, noted that some of them ride recklessly without minding traffic rules, causing accidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is in your interest to abide by traffic rule; any time you violate them, you are putting your life, passengers and other road users at risk,\u201d IP Kayihura said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are entitled to similar road safety measures like other road users, so you should not assume that road signs do not apply to you. You, therefore, have the responsibility of protecting the lives of your passengers and those of all road users. You can make yourselves safer and respected by being competent and not over speeding, riding on allocated lanes, using lights at night, and otherwise following the same traffic laws as motorists and vehicle drivers while on road.\u201d <\/p>\n

IP Kayihura also sensitized the cyclists on fighting drug abuse.<\/p>\n

With some of the cyclists said to be drug abusers, he reminded them that it\u2019s both a crime punishable by Rwandan laws, and a factor that can lure them into accidents due to it s effects like failure to judge correctly and think wisely.<\/p>\n

He instead urged them to report colleagues and other people, who indulge in drug related crimes.<\/p>\n

Vivence Kanani, one of the representatives of the cyclists hailed Rwanda National Police for its outreach programme saying that, \u201csuch abgathering reminds us of being responsible citizens by ensuring security of our clients and our own safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
