{The government of Rwanda has signed agreements with a UK-based company, Ignite Power Ltd, to implement the project of generating and distributing solar energy for lighting rural areas which don\u2019t have access to the national grid.}<\/p>\n

The project to be implemented at a cost of USD50 million is expected to connect 250,000 households as a way of accelerating the government plan of hooking 70% of Rwanda households by 2018.<\/p>\n

The government agreement with Ignite Power Ltd signed yesterday comes into force following the approval by the cabinet meeting held on 18th January 2016 that endorsed the company to lead implementation of the project.<\/p>\n

The permanent secretary in the ministry of infrastructure, Germaine Kamayirese, said that households under 1 % are lit using off-grid power sources.<\/p>\n

A total of 530,000 households need to be connected via off-grid have at least 22% households by 2018.<\/p>\n

Kamayirese confirms that Ignite Power Lt will help in connecting 10% households with solar power. The Government of Rwanda will contribute through mobilization of people to use solar power.<\/p>\n

The CEO of Ignite Power Ltd, Yariv Cohen has said that solar power is a solution for African continent. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delighted to collaborate with Rwanda government to support a majority of citizens to access electricity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The five-year project will benefit residents of Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza, Rwamagana, Gakenke, Rulindo and Kamonyi districts.<\/p>\n
