{"id":22181,"date":"2015-12-29T03:51:23","date_gmt":"2015-12-29T03:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/china-to-finance-mali-strategic-railway-overhaul\/"},"modified":"2015-12-29T03:51:01","modified_gmt":"2015-12-29T03:51:01","slug":"china-to-finance-mali-strategic-railway-overhaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/china-to-finance-mali-strategic-railway-overhaul\/","title":{"rendered":"China to finance Mali strategic railway overhaul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{China has agreed to finance a much-needed overhaul of the Malian stretch of the key railway line between Bamako and Dakar, the Malian transport ministry said on Monday.}<\/p>\n<p>The renovation, costing $1.4 billion dollars, comes after China last week said it would also finance the Senegalese part of the line, for over $1.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The Bamako-Dakar line, around 1,300 kilometres (800 miles) long, is vital for trade between Mali and Senegal but has been in bad shape, hampering smooth exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>The contract between Bamako and state-owned China Railway Construction Corporation International for the 600-kilometre railway stretch running through Mali was signed on Saturday, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The deal also includes the training of engineers and technicians, an overhaul of 22 train stations and the construction of a domestic railway line.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese funds were loaned to Mali at an interest rate of two percent or lower and are to be repaid over 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>The railway is key to the trade of landlocked Mali, as part of its goods transit through the Senegalese port of Dakar.<\/p>\n<p>Mali and Senegal revoked a 25-year operating concession awarded to Advens after only 12 years, accusing the French company of neglecting the upkeep of the line.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-10162 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/part-par-par7506849-1-1-0.jpg\" alt=\"Malian women walk on March 6, 2013, at a street market near railroad tracks in the Malian capital Bamako\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Source:AFP:[China to finance Mali strategic railway overhaul->http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/china-finance-mali-strategic-railway-overhaul-183042793&#8211;finance.html]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{China has agreed to finance a much-needed overhaul of the Malian stretch of the key railway line between Bamako and Dakar, the Malian transport ministry said on Monday.} The renovation, costing $1.4 billion dollars, comes after China last week said it would also finance the Senegalese part of the line, for over $1.1 billion.
