{"id":22163,"date":"2015-12-28T10:14:10","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T10:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/uganda-prisons-wants-2500-convicts-pardoned\/"},"modified":"2015-12-28T10:13:47","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T10:13:47","slug":"uganda-prisons-wants-2500-convicts-pardoned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/uganda-prisons-wants-2500-convicts-pardoned\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda:Prisons wants 2500 convicts pardoned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The Prison\u2019s Service has submitted names of 2,500 prisoners for presidential pardon, the Spokesperson Frank Baine has said.}<\/p>\n<p>The prerogative of mercy committee chaired by the Attorney General will scrutinize and there after forward the names to the President for pardon.<\/p>\n<p>Article 121 of the Constitution allows the President to exercise his powers through the prerogative of mercy to release prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda Prisons Service is mandated to compile a list of prisoners from various detention centres who qualify for the presidential pardon. The department then submits the names to the Attorney General\u2019s office for approval annually.<\/p>\n<p>A number of inmates have benefited from the presidential pardon.
