{"id":22161,"date":"2015-12-28T07:52:05","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T07:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/japan-and-south-korea-reach-deal-on-wartime-sex\/"},"modified":"2015-12-28T07:51:54","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T07:51:54","slug":"japan-and-south-korea-reach-deal-on-wartime-sex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/japan-and-south-korea-reach-deal-on-wartime-sex\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan and South Korea reach deal on wartime sex slaves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Tokyo offers $8.7m in compensation for former sex slaves, who were referred to as &#8220;comfort women&#8221; in wartime Japan.}<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has heralded a &#8220;new era&#8221; in Japanese &#8211; South Korean relations after the two countries reached a landmark deal on the issue of wartime sex slaves.<\/p>\n<p>Under Monday&#8217;s deal, Japan will finance a 1bn yen aid ($8.7m) fund for the Korean women forced into Japanese military-run brothels during World War II, euphemistically referred to as &#8220;comfort women&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Japan and South Korea will welcome a new era,&#8221; Abe told reporters after speaking by phone with South Korean President Park Geun-Hye. &#8220;Both countries will cooperate together to open&#8221; it, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was reached in South Korea&#8217;s capital Seoul at a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The comfort women issue&#8230; occurred with the involvement of the Japanese military&#8230; and the Japanese government acutely feels its responsibility,&#8221; Japanese foreign minister Fumio Kishida said after a meeting with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-Se.<\/p>\n<p>Kishida added that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed an &#8220;apology and repentance from the bottom of his heart&#8221; to the victims.<\/p>\n<p>Yun Byung-se said the agreement was &#8220;final and irreversible,&#8221; as long as Japan faithfully followed through with its promises.<\/p>\n<p>Strained ties<\/p>\n<p>The issue has long been a source of friction between Seoul and Tokyo, with South Korea previously accussing Japanese leaders of repeatedly failing to properly atone for wartime atrocities.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of women from around Asia, many of them Korean, were sent to front-line military brothels to provide sex to Japanese soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>In South Korea, there are 46 such surviving former sex slaves, mostly in their late 80s or early 90s.<\/p>\n<p>Many survivors of the wartime sexual slavery had urged Japan to issue an official apology, make reparations and include wartime atrocities in Japanese school textbooks.<\/p>\n<p>The US sees North Korea as a key rival in the south east Asian region and hopes to benefit from the strengthening of ties between its two allies, South Korea and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The two Northeast Asian countries together host about 80,000 U.S. troops and are members of now-stalled regional talks aimed at ending North Korea&#8217;s nuclear ambitions in return for aid.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-10147 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/d6d14af0159e4fc495c6425cbb3c73e1_18.jpg\" alt=\"The deal was reached in Seoul at a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Source:Al Jazeera:[Japan and South Korea reach deal on wartime sex slaves->http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2015\/12\/japan-south-korea-reach-comfort-women-agreement-151228072000869.html]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Tokyo offers $8.7m in compensation for former sex slaves, who were referred to as &#8220;comfort women&#8221; in wartime Japan.} Japan&#8217;s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has heralded a &#8220;new era&#8221; in Japanese &#8211; South Korean relations after the two countries reached a landmark deal on the issue of wartime sex slaves.
