{Police have rallied over 700 commercial motorcyclists in Huye District to join a crime prevention drive in a bid to ensure public safety.}<\/p>\n

The call was made by Huye District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Francis Muheto during a meeting \u200eheld on December 23.<\/p>\n

The meeting brought together members of COTAMOHU and CIM motorcycle cooperatives in Huye.<\/p>\n

CSP Muheto warned taxi-moto operators against facilitating criminality by transporting wrongdoers, or illicit goods.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn case one suspects either a colleague or a passenger of being involved in a crime, they should report to the Police immediately because ensuring safety and security is everybody\u2019s responsibility,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He further urged them to respect traffic rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo abide by traffic rules,at least one has to ensure that motorcyclists carry one passenger at a time, own a driver\u2019s licence, insurance, wear a helmet and a reflector jacket,\u201d CSP Muheto told the motorcyclists.<\/p>\n

He went on to warn them against over speeding and bad maneuvers which lead to road accidents. <\/p>\n

The head of CIM cooperative, Jean Chrysostome Habimana thanked the police for the lessons and vowed to contribute to crime prevention and also their safety. <\/p>\n

\u200eDuring the meeting, it was observed that with recklessness and bad maneuvers of commercial motorcyclists being among the major causes of road accidents and a number of motorcycle taxi operators arrested for either aiding or conducting a criminal and illegal activities, such awareness’ are valued to engage this group of transport business to be an eye for their colleagues and be active in community policing activities.<\/p>\n
