{"id":22088,"date":"2015-12-24T11:27:46","date_gmt":"2015-12-24T11:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/ghana-demands-return-of-500-000-spent-on-bus\/"},"modified":"2015-12-24T11:27:03","modified_gmt":"2015-12-24T11:27:03","slug":"ghana-demands-return-of-500-000-spent-on-bus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/ghana-demands-return-of-500-000-spent-on-bus\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana demands return of $500,000 spent on bus rebrand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Ghana has demanded a $500,000 (\u00a3350,000) refund after its transport ministry spent $1m to paint more than 100 buses with portraits of the country&#8217;s recent leaders.}<\/p>\n<p>The contractor, Smartty&#8217;s Management Limited, has been asked to return the excess payment, the government said.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Transport Minister Dzifa Attivor resigned following a public outcry over the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana is struggling with a large budget deficit and a widening public debt.<\/p>\n<p>The branding involved respraying the 116 imported passenger buses and adding portraits of the current President John Mahama, his three immediate predecessors and Ghana&#8217;s first head of state, Kwame Nkrumah.<br \/>\n&#8216;Not value for money&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>A proper procurement method was &#8220;not followed and the contract did not ensure value for money,&#8221; the government said after a review by Attorney General Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition and anti-corruption campaigners have raised concerns over the amount spent, which they said was far too much, forcing the presidency to set up an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Sammy Darko in the capital, Accra, says many people think the government is not doing enough to tackle budget mismanagement.<\/p>\n<p>They want to see people being charged for causing financial loss to the state, he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Attivor&#8217;s resignation is the first by a Ghanaian minister in more than a decade and comes amid efforts by the government to cut spending as it implements a three-year International Monetary Fund plan to restore fiscal stability.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Mr Mahama banned public officials, including ministers, from first class air travel and he suspended non-essential trips.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-10076 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_87369675_918739b1-90dc-46ed-898a-b188eb07a805.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Source:BBC:[Ghana demands return of $500,000 spent on bus rebrand->http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-35175324]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Ghana has demanded a $500,000 (\u00a3350,000) refund after its transport ministry spent $1m to paint more than 100 buses with portraits of the country&#8217;s recent leaders.} The contractor, Smartty&#8217;s Management Limited, has been asked to return the excess payment, the government said.
