{"id":21964,"date":"2015-12-19T01:04:42","date_gmt":"2015-12-19T01:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/zuma-reflects-on-unity-among-south-africans\/"},"modified":"2015-12-19T01:04:25","modified_gmt":"2015-12-19T01:04:25","slug":"zuma-reflects-on-unity-among-south-africans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/zuma-reflects-on-unity-among-south-africans\/","title":{"rendered":"Zuma reflects on unity among South Africans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{Cape Town \u2013 The government was fostering social cohesion by popularising national symbols and teaching schoolchildren about their rights and responsibilities, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.<br \/>\n}<\/p>\n<p>He said, in his end of year statement, that there were also continued efforts to ensure there was a national flag in every school.<\/p>\n<p>The bill of responsibilities and values had been included in all Life Orientation workbooks, reaching pupils in over 23 000 schools.<\/p>\n<p>Zuma said new sites had popped up across the country to promote and preserve forgotten aspects of of our heritage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like arts and culture, sport continues to be a major unifying force; even when we do not win for example the 2015 Rugby World Cup.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said research indicated that pride in local sports teams was strong. <\/p>\n<p>Zuma also reflected on xenophobic attacks that rocked the country in April.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The majority of South Africa spoke out strongly against the attacks and reaffirmed our country\u2019s support of human rights and dignity for all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said a national action plan to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance would be submitted for Cabinet approval before the end of the financial year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Work continues towards the achievement of a truly united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa.
