{Police in Nyarugenge District arrested two women identified as Janet Uwamahoro and Justine Mutoni in connection with trafficking drugs.}<\/p>\n

The suspects were arrested on December 16 in Kamuhoza cell, Kimisagara Sector with 7000 pellets of cannabis. According to the Central Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Modeste Mbabazi, Mutoni was arrested as she was selling the drugs to Uwamahoro.<\/p>\n

The suspects are currently held at Rwezamenyo police station as investigations continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have since strengthened operations against drug abuse as means of reducing crimes since they are at the center of fueling other crimes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are effects to the consumer but the effects can go as far as affecting families, communities and the country. This is why we should collectively fight trade and use of these substances,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis in turn affects diverse sectors such as economy, education, health, morals and of course without forgetting internal security where drugs lay a foundation to other crimes such as domestic violence, robberies and homicides, which have been registered over time.\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Article 594 of the penal code penalises any person, who consumes, injects, inhales, anoints him\/herself with or makes any other unlawful use of narcotic drugs, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of one to three years and a fine of Rwf50, 000 to Rwf500, 000.<\/p>\n

A number of people have been arrested for either selling or consuming drugs, with scores of them prosecuted or await their fate.<\/p>\n

As part of the ongoing efforts to curb the drug abuse menace, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has and will continue to conduct countrywide sensitization campaigns on the negative effects of drugs to call for joint efforts to fight such illicit drugs and other crimes.<\/p>\n
