{"id":2152,"date":"2012-04-09T08:17:07","date_gmt":"2012-04-09T08:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/unamid-pays-tribute-to-genocide-victims\/"},"modified":"2012-04-09T08:12:57","modified_gmt":"2012-04-09T08:12:57","slug":"unamid-pays-tribute-to-genocide-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/unamid-pays-tribute-to-genocide-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"UNAMID Pays Tribute to Genocide Victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-1408 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/png\/darfur.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>{{The Rwandan Community working with the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and fellow Peacekeepers from different countries and the Darfur community, paid their tribute to the victims of the Rwandan Genocide against Tutsis.}}<\/p>\n<p>The tribute, under the theme: \u201cLearning from our history to build a bright future\u201d, was part of the 18th Commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsis.<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Gen. Patrick Nyamvumba the UNAMID Force Commander said, \u201cLet us learn the moral lessons of the Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda and denounce ethnic and tribal rivalry and embrace each other in a spirit of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.\u2019\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Gen. Nyamvumba noted that for the last 18 years, Rwandans have worked to rebuild their lives and chart a new course for their country\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the only way to truly honour the memory of victims was to ensure that such tragedies never occurred again. <\/p>\n<p>He called upon his compatriots to continue to build on a new Rwanda devoid of rancour, acrimony and violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, Rwanda is growing, and Rwanda is sending peacekeepers to United Nations Missions in different parts of the world to show our commitment and determination to cultivate peace, development,  and concern for humanitarian issues,\u2019\u2019 the Force Commander said.<\/p>\n<p>A community leader in El Fasher, Sheik Haron Musa expressed sympathy with the unfortunate development, which he said claimed the lives of \u201cour brothers and sisters, as well as children in Rwanda\u2019\u2019, stressing the need for peaceful co-existence in Africa, irrespective of tribes, color and religion.<\/p>\n<p>In an emotion-laden testimony, Albert Attwell from UNAMID Mission Support Centre, who witnessed the genocide, described the incident as \u201cman inhumanity to man\u2019\u2019, saying \u201cI saw most of the killings of children, women and men of Tutsi extraction and Hutus who refused to cooperate with killers.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, I saw hell and I have seen hell during the period of the genocide\u2019\u2019, Attwell said.<\/p>\n<p>He also paid tribute to the people and government of Rwanda for the resilience and dignity they have shown in working towards national recovery and managing the trauma caused by genocide.<\/p>\n<p>At the event, some UNAMID workers also stressed the need to promote education, as a tool to help reconciliation and understanding between the people.<\/p>\n<p>The commemoration included laying of wreath and one minute silence to honour the victims, as well as the survivors, the signing of a guest register and a night vigil.<\/p>\n<p>Similar events were held in different areas of Darfur like Kabkabiya in the North and Nyala in the South. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{{The Rwandan Community working with the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and fellow Peacekeepers from different countries and the Darfur community, paid their tribute to the victims of the Rwandan Genocide against Tutsis.}} The tribute, under the theme: \u201cLearning from our history to build a bright future\u201d, was part of the 18th Commemoration [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[75],"byline":[334],"hashtag":[],"class_list":["post-2152","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","tag-homenews","byline-igihe-reporter"],"bylines":[{"id":334,"name":"IGIHE Reporter","slug":"igihe-reporter","description":"","image":{"id":0,"url":"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/?s=96&d=mm&f=y&r=g","alt":"Default avatar","title":"Default avatar","caption":"","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","sizes":[]},"user_id":null}],"contributors":[{"id":334,"name":"IGIHE Reporter","slug":"igihe-reporter","description":"","image":{"id":0,"url":"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/?s=96&d=mm&f=y&r=g","alt":"Default avatar","title":"Default avatar","caption":"","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","sizes":[]},"user_id":null}],"featured_image":null,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2152","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2152"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2152\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2152"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2152"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2152"},{"taxonomy":"byline","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/byline?post=2152"},{"taxonomy":"hashtag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/hashtag?post=2152"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
