{"id":215,"date":"2011-05-20T13:13:26","date_gmt":"2011-05-20T13:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/hotel-spearheads-east-african-cultural\/"},"modified":"2011-05-20T13:13:09","modified_gmt":"2011-05-20T13:13:09","slug":"hotel-spearheads-east-african-cultural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/hotel-spearheads-east-african-cultural\/","title":{"rendered":"Hotel spearheads East African cultural integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Despite being a few months old <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"Gikondo-based\">Gikondo-based<\/span> Roasters hotel has become a cultural melting pot for East African communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;A co-owner of the establishment Fred <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Korir\">Korir<\/span> explains that traditional events are part of the hotel\u2019s objective to promote cultural exchange, which also plays a big role in the regional integration process.<\/p>\n<p>Popular cultural events held so far are particularly Kenyan themed, yet related ones from other countries are underway. Recent events include Kenya\u2019s <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Kikuyu\">Kikuyu<\/span> based <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"Mugithi\">Mugithi<\/span> night, <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Luyha\u2019s\">Luyha\u2019s<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Murembe\">Murembe<\/span> night and <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Kalenjin\u2019s\">Kalenjin\u2019s<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Tumin\">Tumin<\/span> night. Cultural events from other countries Uganda\u2019s <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Baganda\">Baganda<\/span> night are scheduled to feature in the new future followed by events from Tanzania and Burundi.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"Korir\u2019s\">Korir\u2019s<\/span> counterpart Caleb <span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"Kenyanya\">Kenyanya<\/span> points out that Rwandan and Burundian patrons are supportive of the cultural themed nights and have requested their respective countries to equally be featured.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Currently, we\u2019re planning a <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"Luo\">Luo<\/span> night followed by a Rwandan <span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"Intore\">Intore<\/span> night because we would also want Kenyans to learn more about this rich culture since some of them are busy in offices and might have less time to learn from their <span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"neighbours\">neighbours<\/span>,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, the Rwandan culture has taught us a lot. That\u2019s why during this month\u2019s <span data-scaytid=\"17\" data-scayt_word=\"Umuganda\">Umuganda<\/span> (communal cleaning), we intend to visit an orphanage and assist them in cleaning their premises,\u201d he discloses.<\/p>\n<p>The cultural nights consist of various activities including a featured community\u2019s dancing techniques, food and most interestingly, basic learning of language.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Korir\">Korir<\/span> discloses that a <span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Kikuyu\">Kikuyu<\/span> meal known as <span data-scaytid=\"18\" data-scayt_word=\"mukimo\">mukimo<\/span> has, for instance, been a <span data-scaytid=\"20\" data-scayt_word=\"favourite\">favourite<\/span> among the locals. &#8220;It (<span data-scaytid=\"19\" data-scayt_word=\"mukimo\">mukimo<\/span>) is made from boiled potatoes which are smashed with vegetables and green maize. The meal is very nutritious.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide events are also celebrated at the establishment including the Bob Marley commemoration, which was held on May 13.
