{"id":21288,"date":"2015-11-21T02:57:23","date_gmt":"2015-11-21T02:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/mississippi-state-election-settled-by-drawing\/"},"modified":"2015-11-21T02:56:50","modified_gmt":"2015-11-21T02:56:50","slug":"mississippi-state-election-settled-by-drawing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/mississippi-state-election-settled-by-drawing\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississippi state election settled by &#8216;drawing straws&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{A Democrat has won a Mississippi House race by drawing a longer straw, an official way to break a tie in a legislative election for the state.}<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Bo Eaton met Republican Mark Tullos to draw straws and Mr Tullos drew the shorter one.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Eaton&#8217;s fateful grasp of the longer straw gave him the victory, keeping Republicans from having a supermajority in the state house.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tullos, not admitting defeat, filed an appeal on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Eaton, a farmer, was excited about his win.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s always happiness in a good crop year,&#8221; he said after winning.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tullos apparently left the room quickly and did not show emotion.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Eaton, a 20-year incumbent, had said he did not approve of the straw-drawing, but he would accept the results.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look, my life&#8217;s a gamble,&#8221; he said, according to the New York Times. &#8220;I&#8217;m a farmer. I depend on the weather and the rain. The statute&#8217;s clear, but my life is not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant presided over the short straw-drawing ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Each candidate had received 4,589 votes in the legislative election for the House seat.<br \/>\nNot uncommon<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 24 states legally decide the outcome of tied legislative elections by drawing straws or flipping coins.<\/p>\n<p>Similar cases have happened in New Mexico and Alaska, using a coin toss.<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut decided in 2007 to eliminate chance games for breaking ties, a year after a coin toss determined a state house election.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-9242 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/mississsipi.jpg\" alt=\"Mr Eaton (centre left) drew the longer straw, beating Mr Tullos (centre right) \" \/><\/figure>\n<p>BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{A Democrat has won a Mississippi House race by drawing a longer straw, an official way to break a tie in a legislative election for the state.} Democrat Bo Eaton met Republican Mark Tullos to draw straws and Mr Tullos drew the shorter one.
