{Aung San Suu Kyi party wins enough seats to be able to choose Myanmar’s next president, according to official results.}<\/p>\n

Myanmar opposition party led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has won a majority in Myanmar’s historic polls, Election Commission has said.<\/p>\n

With the votes still being counted, the electoral body said on Friday that Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party has crossed the 329 threshold it needed for a majority in the 664-member, two-house parliament.<\/p>\n

NLD was awarded 21 further lower house seats by the Union Election Commission, taking its overall parliamentary tally to 348 seats, AFP news agency reported.<\/p>\n

A party with a combined parliamentary majority is able to select the next president, who can then name a Cabinet and form a new government.<\/p>\n

The tally from November 8 vote was still being counted and final results were not expected for several days.<\/p>\n

The NLD’s landslide victory means they can nominate candidates for the top post of president, even though Suu Kyi is barred from holding the post.<\/p>\n
