{"id":21110,"date":"2015-11-08T04:23:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-08T04:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/india-prime-minister-in-bihar-election-setback\/"},"modified":"2015-11-08T04:22:54","modified_gmt":"2015-11-08T04:22:54","slug":"india-prime-minister-in-bihar-election-setback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/india-prime-minister-in-bihar-election-setback\/","title":{"rendered":"India Prime Minister in Bihar election setback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has admitted defeat for his governing BJP in a key regional election in Bihar state.}<\/p>\n<p>The BJP was running against an alliance of parties linked to main opposition Congress party in the state assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Modi won a convincing victory in last year&#8217;s national elections, but this poll was seen as a referendum on his economic programme.<\/p>\n<p>Defeat is a major setback, says the BBC&#8217;s Sanjoy Majumder in Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>However, a spokesman for the Hindu-led nationalist party rejected suggestions the result for the state assembly was a personal blow for Mr Modi, saying the BJP &#8220;managed a creditable performance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister had been hoping a victory in Bihar would boost his party&#8217;s strength in India&#8217;s upper house of parliament, which made up of representatives of state legislatures and where he lacks a majority.<\/p>\n<p>With votes still being counted, the anti-Modi alliance was ahead in 125 seats, compared with the BJP&#8217;s 79 seats, out of 238 where the trends were clear.<\/p>\n<p>Bihar, in the north-west of the country, is one of India&#8217;s largest states, with a population of 100 million, and is also on of the poorest. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-9057 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/india_prime_minister.jpg\" alt=\"The defeat is seen as a setback for the Indian PM \" \/><\/figure>\n<p>BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has admitted defeat for his governing BJP in a key regional election in Bihar state.} The BJP was running against an alliance of parties linked to main opposition Congress party in the state assembly.
