Francois <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span>, a Rwandan-born Finnish citizen, was sentenced last<br \/>\nsummer to life in prison for mass murder.<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The court plans to be in session in Rwanda for 18 days in September and October<br \/>\nto hear testimony from 39 prosecution witnesses. The court also hopes to visit<br \/>\nplaces where killings took place.<\/p>\n<p>The court will also go to Zambia in October to hear testimony from 15 <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"defence\">defence<\/span><br \/>\nwitnesses. Most of the witnesses live in Zambia and other countries in the<br \/>\nregion.<\/p>\n<p>The arrangement still requires the approval of the Rwandan and Zambian<br \/>\ngovernments.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant will follow the events via video link from Finland, as was done<br \/>\nin the first trial.<\/p>\n<p>The case is being handled in Finland because the Ministry of Justice refused to<br \/>\nextradite <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span> to Rwanda for fear that he might not get a fair trial<br \/>\nthere.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nlower court found that <span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span>, a resident of <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Porvoo\">Porvoo<\/span>, had led attacks against<br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Tutsis\">Tutsis<\/span> in the south of Rwanda in 1994 and gave orders that led to their deaths.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span><br \/>\nsought asylum in Finland, in 2003.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>He was<br \/>\nconvicted on two charges&nbsp;; intent to destroy the Tutsi population in <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Maraba\">Maraba<\/span>, and<br \/>\nspreading malicious propaganda calling for their extermination, crimes for<br \/>\nwhich he was handed a life sentence.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>He is<br \/>\nsaid to have masterminded the killing of over 5,000 people in <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Nyakizu\">Nyakizu<\/span>, Southern<br \/>\nProvince.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span><br \/>\nallegedly <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"organised\">organised<\/span> and maintained night patrols and road blocks, forcing the<br \/>\nTutsi to leave their homes.
