{"id":208,"date":"2011-05-17T13:44:32","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T13:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/tigo-rwanda-launches-mobile-money-payment-service\/"},"modified":"2011-05-17T13:43:35","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T13:43:35","slug":"tigo-rwanda-launches-mobile-money-payment-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/tigo-rwanda-launches-mobile-money-payment-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Tigo Rwanda launches mobile money payment service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong><span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Rwanda, a telecom brand owned by <span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"Millicom\">Millicom<\/span> Cellular International (MIC), recently inaugurated its mobile money services in Rwanda, targeted at subscribers with limited or no access to banking services.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Rwanda is the second mobile company to launch such a service after its major competitor <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"MTN\">MTN<\/span> Rwanda launched its mobile money product last year.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> has similar services in Ghana and Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda\u2019s rural areas have limited access to financial services, with the central bank saying only 1.7 million deposit accounts had been registered by December 2010 out of a population of 9 million.<\/p>\n<p>With about 3.3 million mobile subscribers shared between <span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"MTN\">MTN<\/span> and <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> as of January this year, Rwandan mobile users can <span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"utilise\">utilise<\/span> the technology to deposit and withdraw money and can pay electricity bills and school fees via text messages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Cash is basically a wallet on your mobile phone. You don\u2019t have to have a bank account,&#8221; said Tom <span data-scaytid=\"17\" data-scayt_word=\"Gutjahr\">Gutjahr<\/span>, <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Rwanda\u2019s chief executive. To sign up for the service is free but one has to be above 18 years and a <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> subscriber with a valid identity card.<\/p>\n<p>Non <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> subscribers will not be able to register for the service but can receive cash on their network from a <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Cash registered <span data-scaytid=\"18\" data-scayt_word=\"peson\">peson<\/span> in any part of the country any time any day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are not a <span data-scaytid=\"19\" data-scayt_word=\"\u201cTigo\">\u201cTigo<\/span> Cash\u201d user, you will still be able to receive money from other <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Cash users,\u201d the CEO said.<\/p>\n<p>Licensed to operate in Rwanda two years ago, <span data-scaytid=\"20\" data-scayt_word=\"MCL\">MCL<\/span> said <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Cash can send between $1 and $550.<\/p>\n<p>John <span data-scaytid=\"21\" data-scayt_word=\"Sebabi\">Sebabi<\/span>, head of payment systems at Rwanda\u2019s central bank, said the new service would deepen financial services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the number of mobile phone exceeds that of bank accounts, then access to financial services is growing which is line with our objectives of increasing access to such services,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Product Manager, <span data-scaytid=\"22\" data-scayt_word=\"Tongai\">Tongai<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"23\" data-scayt_word=\"Maramba\">Maramba<\/span> announced that <span data-scaytid=\"24\" data-scayt_word=\"Banque\">Banque<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"25\" data-scayt_word=\"Commerciale\">Commerciale<\/span> du Rwanda (<span data-scaytid=\"26\" data-scayt_word=\"BCR\">BCR<\/span>) would be the host of the <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"Tigo\">Tigo<\/span> Cash trust account.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tigo Rwanda, a telecom brand owned by Millicom Cellular International (MIC), recently inaugurated its mobile money services in Rwanda, targeted at subscribers with limited or no access to banking services.
