{"id":206,"date":"2011-05-17T12:52:12","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T12:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwanda-ex-paramilitary-chief-jailed-for-genocide\/"},"modified":"2011-05-17T12:51:01","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T12:51:01","slug":"rwanda-ex-paramilitary-chief-jailed-for-genocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwanda-ex-paramilitary-chief-jailed-for-genocide\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda ex-paramilitary chief jailed for genocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The UN court for Rwanda handed a 30-year prison sentence to former army chief <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"Augustin\">Augustin<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Bizimungu\">Bizimungu<\/span> for his role in the 1994 genocide in which around 800,000 people were killed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The court on Tuesday also convicted <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Augustin\">Augustin<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Ndindiliyimana\">Ndindiliyimana<\/span>, the former head of the paramilitary police, of genocide crimes but ordered his release as he had already spent 11 years behind bars since his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>The court ruled that while <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Bizimungu\">Bizimungu<\/span> had complete control over the men he commanded, <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Ndindiliyimana\">Ndindiliyimana<\/span> had only &#8220;limited control&#8221; over his men after the start of the massacres on April 6, 1994 and was opposed to the killing.<\/p>\n<p>Two senior officers tried alongside the generals were also sentenced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Major Francois-Xavier <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Nzuwonemeye\">Nzuwonemeye<\/span>, the former commander of the reconnaissance battalion, was handed 20 years in jail for killing as a crime against humanity and murder as a war crime.<\/p>\n<p>His subordinate, captain Innocent <span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"Sagahutu\">Sagahutu<\/span>, was also sentenced to 20 years.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Bizimungu\">Bizimungu<\/span> and <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Ndindiliyimana\">Ndindiliyimana<\/span> are two of the most senior figures to be tried by the Tanzania-based International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (<span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"ICTR\">ICTR<\/span>) in connection with the genocide.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Ndindiliyimana\">Ndindiliyimana<\/span> was arrested in January 2000 in Belgium and <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"Nzuwonemeye\">Nzuwonemeye<\/span> the following month in France. <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"Sagahutu\">Sagahutu<\/span> was detained in Denmark and <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"Bizimungu\">Bizimungu<\/span> in 2002 in Angola.<\/p>\n<p>The case had been effectively adjourned since June 2009 when prosecutors requested life sentences for all four defendants while their <span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"defence\">defence<\/span> lawyers asked for their acquittal.<\/p>\n<p>The long-running case is known as the Military II trial.<\/p>\n<p>In the Military I trial, Colonel <span data-scaytid=\"17\" data-scayt_word=\"Theoneste\">Theoneste<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"18\" data-scayt_word=\"Bagosora\">Bagosora<\/span>, presented by the prosecutor as the brains behind the genocide, was sentenced to life in prison in December 2008, along with two other senior military figures.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"19\" data-scayt_word=\"Bagosora\">Bagosora<\/span> appealed and the hearing ran from March 30 to April 1, but the appeal verdict has yet to be handed down.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN court for Rwanda handed a 30-year prison sentence to former army chief Augustin Bizimungu for his role in the 1994 genocide in which around 800,000 people were killed.
