{"id":20586,"date":"2015-09-17T01:51:57","date_gmt":"2015-09-17T01:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/kagame-receives-european-union-commissioner\/"},"modified":"2015-09-30T02:52:39","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T02:52:39","slug":"kagame-receives-european-union-commissioner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/kagame-receives-european-union-commissioner\/","title":{"rendered":"Kagame receives European Union commissioner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, has said the EU was aligning its development projects with Rwanda\u2019s national development reforms and priorities.<\/p>\n<p>His comments came shortly after meeting President Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not want our development cooperation to come as a kind of donation. We want to be partners that do not export our views on development but we would like, always, that development changes come from the inside,\u201d the Croatian politician and diplomat told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Mimica said he welcomed the opportunity to discuss such an arrangement with the President with whom he also discussed other wider and broader peace and security issues in the region where, he said Rwanda was \u201can important contributor to peace and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before meeting President Kagame, he noted that the politico-economic union of 28 European member states would continue supporting Rwanda\u2019s economic development agenda for the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a meeting with the Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Claver Gatete, Mimica said the bloc was satisfied and impressed with how Rwanda used EU grants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInfrastructure improvement and better regional connectivity are recognised as one of the important factors stimulating trade, investment and economic growth. The EU looks forward to a continued partnership with Rwanda in terms of supporting programmes in key priority sectors for the next five years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also impressed with the excellent leadership in Rwanda and therefore urge the private sector to take full advantage and contribute to the country\u2019s economic development.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-8466 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/eu-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Gatete acknowledged that EU support was contributing significantly to the socio-economic transformation of Rwandans.<br \/>\n\u201cThey [EU] also continue to support our regional integration plans through the recently launched Kigali-Gatuna road as well as their contribution to the rehabilitation of Rusumo-Kayonza-Kagitumba road under the EAC framework,\u201d Gatete said.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the EU also approved a grant of \u20ac20 million for Rusumo\u2013Kayonza\u2013Kagitumba road project rehabilitation under EAC framework.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda has in the past received significant support through the European Development Fund (EDF).<\/p>\n<p>In 2003, it received a \u20ac218 million; \u20ac429.7 million in 2007 and \u20ac460 million in 2014 in grants.<\/p>\n<p>The current and eleventh EDF signed in 2004 for the period running from 2015-2020 was allocated to energy (\u20ac200 million); agriculture (\u20ac200 million); governance (\u20ac40 million); capacity building (\u20ac10 million); and civil society programmes (\u20ac10 million) sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The NewTimes<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, has said the EU was aligning its development projects with Rwanda\u2019s national development reforms and priorities.
